Sounds Of Love with Ellen Johnson & Jason Martineau

Ellen Johnson and Jason Martineau share a musical dance through songs they love, poetry and free improvisation. From a variety of musical genres they aspire to create a duo experience of creative nuance and connection using songs that speak of the many shades of love.

“Many musicians touch the heart or the mind or the soul, some reach out to more than one of these, only a few appeal to all. Ellen Johnson is clearly one of these select few." – Bruce Crowther, Jazz Journalist International/author of Singing Jazz
"When it comes to shaping wordless gems, Johnson packs as imaginative a wallop as the mighty (Bobby) McFerrin." – Christopher Louden, JazzTimes

The Sophia Ensemble Performs The Kreutzer Sonata

When Beethoven wrote the tempestuous Kreutzer violin sonata in 1803, he had no idea that it would take on a life of its own. Almost a century later, novelist Leo Tolstoy used the sonata as the setting for his short story of the same name. In Tolstoy's version, a suspicious husband encounters his wife performing the Kreutzer sonata with a handsome violinist. Enraged and inspired by the passion of the music that passes between them, he murders her in a jealous rage. Years later, the Czech composer Leoš Janáček spun the dramatic events of the short story into a string quartet, making his own mark on the Kreutzer Sonata.

Join the musicians of the Sophia Ensemble as they explore the themes that inspired three of the world's greatest artists. The Sophia Ensemble is comprised of UC Berkeley students who are also principal musicians from the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. They take their name from Sophia Tolstaya, the wife of Leo Tolstoy.
