Django Mack - "100 Page Tattoo" EP Release Party

Django Mack returns to the Maybeck to celebrate the release of the new EP, 100 Page Tattoo. Their last CD inspired comments like, “...intoxicating …a non-stop homage to ‘real’ American music” –Matthew Easler – gigband.com

Come, let us know what you think of the new work! Equal parts gypsy troubadour & high plains drifter, Django growls and croons while the band brings together elements of delta blues, Tin Pan Alley jazz, western folk, and old-time rock & roll into a lively, engaging set of drinking songs and narrow escapes, punctuated by guitars, horns and the occasional clinking of glasses.

Works for Viola and Piano by Schumann, Brahms, Clarke and Carter

Deanna Badizadegan, viola & Britton Day, piano

Program:
Schumann Märchenbilder
Brahms Sonata in F Minor
- Intermission -
Clarke Sonata
Carter Elegy

With its raw and expressive voice, the viola is beautifully suited to capture the range of emotion and expression that color the human experience. The program begins with Schumann’s Märchenbilder, a collection of four Fairy Tales composed for the viola and piano, which invite the listener into a childish fantasy world. Brahms’ Sonata for Viola and Piano, written just a few years before Brahms’ death, is a deeply expressive and lush work performed widely on both the clarinet and the viola and considered one of the great masterpieces for the instrument duo. Rebecca Clarke’s Sonata, one of the few works written by a female composer to have entered the mainstream repertoire, is a highly idiomatic work that captures a wide variety of characters and styles and showcase the viola's versatility of sound. The program concludes with Carter’s Elegy for Viola and Piano, an elegant and lyrical piece that Carter himself rearranged for many different instruments before finally settling on the combination of viola and piano, which he felt uniquely captured the appropriate sonority for the piece.
